Congratulations: $1,300 Scholarship
Recipient
Lincoln Goodyear Employees Federal Credit
Union member Melanie Newell, Granddaughter
of Ray Porath, was the winner of the
Lincoln Chapter of Credit Unions 2003
Credit Unions for Higher Education
Scholarship Contest.
Melanie’s essay touched on how she grew
frustrated with banks that charged high
fees and service charges and didn’t
receive the personal attention she
expected. She also wrote that her
Grandfather Ray Porath, and long time
member of the credit union since 1960,
heard her frustrations and convinced her
to join the credit union. “Members benefit
from the credit union in many ways. You
can depend on the Credit Union and know
you will get honest and truthful service,”
said Ray Porath.
Her Grandfather’s advice really stuck with
Melanie.
“The words of “trust” and
“helping people” really meant something to
me,” she said about her Grandfather’s
experience with the credit union. She took
her Grandfather’s words of advice to heart
and became a credit union member. Now,
when she needs to conduct financial
business she looks forward to the personal
service and the attention she receives.
“Every time I walk in I am greeted with a
smile. Everyone is very nice and they make
you feel like you are part of the credit
union. I will be a
credit union member for life,” Melanie
said with a smile. “I hope other members
continue to get their family members
involved with the credit union. It is a
great place to do business,” she added.
Melanie is currently a sophomore at the
University of NE studying Psychology and
Peace Studies. She is applying to a
private Liberal Arts college in Minnesota
to continue her education in Peace
Studies.
In addition to her studies and work,
Melanie is also very active in the
community. She takes pride in being a
positive role model and is involved with
the local Mentoring Program for Junior
High students.
The credit union volunteers, management
and staff would like to congratulate
Melanie and wish her luck in your
continued education!

Your Credit
Union:
Built by Generations of Tradition &
Embarking on New Relations
Your credit union has proudly served
members since October 5, 1955 and has
built many professional and personal
relationships during this time. These
strong relationships helped establish a
tradition of encouraging family members to
join the credit union.
There are now second and third generation
members enjoying the benefits from credit
union membership. “This is a sign that a
very strong tradition of loyalty and
ownership has been established throughout
the years,” said Mary Sailors, Vice
President of Operations.
The credit union has embarked on an
exciting path built by a strong foundation
of tradition of loyal members. The credit
union is now open to “those who live,
work, worship, or attend school in
Lancaster County, NE.” This is a new and
exciting time for the credit union. “Our
core Goodyear employee membership will
always remain very important to us and our
mission remains to help all members. Our
efforts to assist members from all groups
will not diminish,” said Jerry Barnett,
President. “This provides the new members
with the opportunities to grow and build
on the strong tradition in which existing
members have grown to appreciate and take
pride,” said Roger Smid, Marketing
Director.
Please share the credit union tradition
with your family, neighbors and community!
They can benefit from credit union
membership only if they know they are
eligible to join. Share your experiences
and enthusiasm for your credit union, and
they will thank you.
Continue to build or encourage your family
members and neighbors to strengthen a
tradition and share your credit union
experience.
